Shockwave therapy

A long-term pain relief and mobility restoration.

Shockwave therapy has gained significant interest in rehabilitation medicine over the last 25years. Based on scientific support, shockwave therapy has helped patients eliminate their problems where conventional therapy has failed.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment method designed to promote healing and relieve pain in musculoskeletal conditions. It uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate blood circulation, accelerate the body's natural healing processes, and break down scar tissue and calcifications in targeted areas.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

Shockwave Therapy involves delivering controlled acoustic waves to the affected area through a handheld device. These waves penetrate the tissues, promoting cellular repair and regeneration by increasing metabolic activity and stimulating collagen production. The therapy is particularly effective in treating chronic pain by enhancing blood flow and breaking up painful calcified deposits, thus reducing inflammation and discomfort.

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy

  • Pain Relief: The therapy helps to alleviate pain associated with chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, tennis elbow, and other tendon-related issues.

  • Improved Mobility: By reducing pain and breaking down calcified tissue, Shockwave Therapy can improve the range of motion and functionality in joints and muscles.

  • Non-Invasive: Unlike surgical options, Shockwave Therapy requires no incisions or anesthesia and has minimal recovery time.

  • Stimulates Healing: The increased blood flow and metabolic activity accelerate the healing process, making it effective for sports injuries and repetitive strain injuries.

  • Quick Sessions: Treatments are typically quick, lasting between 15 to 30 minutes, with no downtime required afterward.

Conditions Treated with Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy is used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Achilles Tendinitis

  • Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow

  • Patellar Tendinitis (Jumper’s Knee)

  • Calcific Shoulder Tendinitis

  • Trigger Points and Myofascial Pain

  • Old scar tissue/muscle strains

  • and More!

What to Expect During a Shockwave Therapy Session

During a session, a gel is applied to the treatment area to improve contact between the skin and the device. The practitioner then uses a handheld applicator to deliver acoustic waves to the target area. Patients may feel some discomfort during the procedure, but the intensity can be adjusted to ensure comfort. Most patients require multiple sessions for optimal results, typically spaced a week apart.

Why Choose Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy is a great option for those looking for a non-invasive, drug-free approach to pain relief and tissue repair. It is widely used by physiotherapists, chiropractors, and sports medicine professionals for its effectiveness in treating chronic pain and enhancing the body’s healing response. If you are suffering from a chronic injury or pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments, Shockwave Therapy might be the solution you need.

What to Expect During Your Shockwave Treatment

If you have sustained an injury or suffer from pain related to a chronic condition, Shockwave Therapy can be an effective solution to promote healing and relieve discomfort. The treatment begins with a thorough assessment by your therapist, which includes testing your range of motion (ROM) and palpation of soft tissues to identify the exact areas needing attention.

During the session, a gel is applied to the treatment area to enhance contact between the skin and the handheld applicator device. This device delivers either high or low acoustic energy waves to the target area. While the waves are being administered, you may experience some discomfort, especially with higher energy levels, as the shockwaves stimulate an inflammatory response that promotes healing. The intensity of the treatment can be adjusted to ensure your comfort throughout the session.

A typical treatment plan ranges from 3 to 6 sessions, spaced one week apart, depending on the severity of the condition being treated. Most patients begin to see positive results after a few sessions, with optimal benefits achieved over the full course of treatment.

+ Does the treatment hurt?

There might be a slight feeling of discomfort during the treatment, however, treatments are short and last only about five minutes. As well, the intensity of the Shockwave can be adjusted to make the patient more comfortable.

+ How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will vary depending on each person, but the effects of each treatment are cumulative. Most people will not need more that 3-6 treatments per area. Many people will notice an improvement after their first treatment.

+ How often will the treatments occur?

Most patients will be treated 1 to 2 times per week depending on their response to the treatment and their tolerance for the treatment.

+ Will there be additional pain after a treatment?

Most patients experience immediate pain relief following a treatment, however within 2-4 hours after the treatment, there may be some soreness in the area.

+ Are there any restrictions after treatment?

It is recommended that a patient refrain from intense physical activity, particularly any activity that would heavily rely upon the treated area for 48 hours post each treatmen

+ Would there be any reason why I shouldn’t get shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy can not be performed if:

  • the application area has had corticosteroids injections.
  • on patients who are pregnant or has thrombosis.
  • if the area has implants or around growth plates in kids.
  • acute injuries and inflammation.
  • you are taking blood thinning medications.

Always consult your therapist prior to booking a shockwave treatment.
